Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy (OT)* is skilled treatment that helps individuals achieve independence and satisfaction in all facets of their life. Occupational Therapists can provide people of various needs with the skills and positive activities to improve their cognitive, physical, and motor skills and enhance their self-esteem and sense of accomplishment.

Occupational therapy training typically includes:

  • Customized treatment programs to improve an individual’s ability to perform daily activities.
  • Comprehensive home and job site evaluations with adaptation and modification recommendations.
  • Performance skills assessments and treatments.
  • Adaptive equipment recommendations and usage training.
  • Guidance and education to assist family members and care providers.

Occupational therapy helps clients not only improve their basic motor functions and reasoning abilities, but also compensate for temporary or permanent loss of function. The goal of Occupational therapy is to help individuals have independent, productive, and fulfilling lives.

While complete independence may not occur depending on the extent of the disability, Occupational Therapists will work with the individual to develop strategies, techniques, or adaptations so they can be as independent as possible.
