Speech Therapy

Responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of communication disorders, a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP)* assesses areas such as language, cognition, motor speech and conversational skills. Hearing acuity may also be part of the initial assessment.

In addition to working on specific language skills, the Speech Pathologist may also assist with attention, memory abstract reasoning and problem solving.

Speech therapy training typically includes:

  • Increasing the ability to problem-solve in an independent environment
  • Improving vocal quality and projection
  • Understanding and developing fluent speech
  • Improving hearing acuity
  • Enhancing self-esteem
  • Increasing the individual’s independence

Speech therapy may address areas of social skills when facilitating conversational skills and cognition. The main goal of Speech therapy is to improve the individual’s ability to understand and express thoughts, ideas and feelings.
