Cognitive Therapy

To encourage success in the activities and contexts of everyday life, Cognitive therapy (CT)* utilizes procedures designed to assist individuals with cognitive impairments. Cognitive Therapists teach individuals how to create systematic processes to overcome stressful situations by dividing complicated tasks into achievable steps.

Cognitive therapy training typically includes:

  • Assisting individuals in identifying their needs and developing appropriate compensation techniques to accommodate the effects of their brain injuries.
  • Collaborating with individuals to develop techniques to enhance problem solving, organization, and processing skills.
  • Developing memory compensation strategies.
  • Integrating employment, educational, and independent living goals.
  • Increasing the individual’s awareness of their head injuries.
  • Educating individuals, families, and staff about the consequences of brain injury.

Cognitive Therapists focus on resolving emotional and behavioral issues resulting from an individual’s faulty thinking habits involving distortions about themselves or their circumstances.

Individuals who complete Cognitive Behavioral therapy courses spend many of the sessions out in the community using real life situations to practice independent living skills.

*Individuals that have met the requirements established in the TBI HCBS Medicaid Waiver Policy and Procedure Manual provide cognitive therapy.
