Top Background

Behavioral Therapy

Behavioral therapy (BT)* focuses on techniques designed to modify behaviors that are maladaptive, anti-social, or self-destructive. Through this therapeutic approach, individuals learn new appropriate behaviors to modify or eliminate negative responses to new or existing environmental influences.

Behavioral therapy training addresses behaviors such as:

  • Aggressive behavior
  • Anger management
  • Eating disorders
  • Phobias
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Post traumatic stress

Working with the individual to identify the thoughts that are causing distress, the Behavioral Therapist employs techniques to alter the resulting behavior. By changing these behaviors, therapists work to help individuals continue to live, work and play in their communities and avoid being placed in more restrictive settings.

Behavioral Therapists work with a variety of mental illnesses as well as the symptoms of mental illness following a brain injury. Severe mental illness and chronic substance abuse could be treated in conjunction with specialists trained in those specific fields.

*Individuals that have met the requirements established in the TBI HCBS Medicaid Waiver Policy and Procedure Manual provide behavioral therapy.

Therapy services will be paid through the HCBS TBI waiver funds for individuals that qualify or services may be contracted through private pay, private insurance, or Worker’s Compensation.
